In a significant milestone for Japan’s inbound tourism from India, the number of Indian visitors to Japan in May 2025 crossed the 40,000 marks for the first time ever in a single month. According to official data, 43,000 Indian travellers visited Japan in May, showcasing Japan’s rising popularity in India, driven by its diverse seasonal attractions, rich cultural heritage, and seamless travel experiences.
May is widely regarded as win-win travel season to visit Japan from India, coinciding with the Indian summer vacations and the conclusion of Japan’s domestic holiday period, known as Golden Week. This timing offers Indian travelers better availability of accommodations and other tourist services, allowing for a more comfortable and less crowded experience. May offers comfortable sightseeing weather with clear skies and mild temperatures, making it ideal for exploring the country.
While 2024 was an exceptional year—recording the highest-ever number of Indian visitors to Japan at approx. 233,100—the momentum has only accelerated in 2025. From January to May 2025 alone, approximately 142,400 Indian travelers visited Japan, representing a remarkable 39.6% increase over the same period in 2024, which saw 102,100 visitors.
This upward trend highlights the strengthening travel ties between India and Japan and reflects the effectiveness of ongoing promotional efforts by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) Delhi office and its partners in the Indian market.
