Navi Mumbai International Airport launched, set to become Asia’s largest connectivity hub

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects and a defining milestone in the nation’s aviation journey. Speaking at the launch, the Prime Minister said that Mumbai’s long wait for a second international airport had finally ended, adding that NMIA would play a vital role in transforming the region into Asia’s largest connectivity hub.

Developed under a landmark public-private partnership between Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL)—a subsidiary of Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL)—and the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), NMIA represents a major stride in India’s infrastructure vision and the government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 agenda.

The Prime Minister described the airport as a “symbol of a developed India,” highlighting its lotus-inspired design that embodies India’s culture and prosperity. He emphasized that the airport would connect Maharashtra’s farmers and small industries to international supply chains, reducing logistics costs, boosting exports, and attracting fresh investment to the region.

Before his address, the Prime Minister toured the new airport’s world-class facilities, accompanied by Maharashtra Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, and Adani Group Director Jeet Adani.

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, said, “This is more than an airport—it is India’s gateway to the future. Every flight from here will carry the ambitions and achievements of a nation on its path to becoming a global superpower.”

Envisioned as a dual-airport system complementing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), NMIA will begin with a capacity of 20 million passengers per annum (MPPA), eventually expanding to handle 90 MPPA, making it one of India’s largest. The airport will feature two parallel runways, sustainable infrastructure, renewable energy systems, and advanced cargo facilities.

Designed as a multimodal hub, NMIA will be integrated with the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, Navi Mumbai and Mumbai Metro, suburban rail networks, and planned waterways—enhancing connectivity, reducing travel times, and strengthening regional trade.

Blending cultural heritage with modern design, NMIA’s lotus-inspired architecture and green building practices symbolize India’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. As a cornerstone of the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, the airport stands as a beacon of progress, engineering excellence, and global ambition.
