Mizoram plans to turn Thenzawl into ‘Peace City’ to boost tourism

The Mizoram government announces plans to transform Thenzawl town in Serchhip district into ‘Thenzawl Peace City’, a flagship initiative aimed at promoting tourism and balanced urban development, officials said on Friday.

According to a senior official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Chief Minister Lalduhoma recently held a meeting with representatives of a consultancy firm tasked with preparing the Thenzawl Peace City Master Plan.

The Chief Minister stated that Thenzawl Peace City will be Mizoram’s first planned township, envisioned as a clean, organized, and aesthetically developed urban centre that will attract visitors and foster sustainable growth. He underscored the need for meticulous planning and quality execution, urging the team to work with dedication and precision.

Lalduhoma also directed that the State Project Monitoring Committee should be involved in reviewing and overseeing the project’s progress.

During the meeting, the consultancy firm shared its experience in similar projects across India and abroad and outlined its approach to developing the Peace City. The official added that 18 reputed firms had participated in the pre-bid process, highlighting the project’s scale and importance.

The meeting was attended by K. Sapdanga, State Minister for Home, Urban Development, and Poverty Alleviation.

Meanwhile, the Mizoram government clarified that it is not shifting the state capital from Aizawl to Thenzawl, dismissing recent allegations. The government said a clerical error in a letter from the Centre had led to the misunderstanding.

Thenzawl, located about 93 km from Aizawl, falls under the Serchhip constituency, represented by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, who was elected from the seat in both the 2018 and 2023 Assembly elections.

Earlier, the Mizo National Front (MNF), the state’s main opposition party, had accused the Chief Minister of attempting to move the capital to Thenzawl and seeking central funds for the initiative—an allegation the government has firmly denied.
