Air India completes retrofit of legacy A320neo fleet

Air India announces the successful completion of the retrofit programme for its legacy A320neo fleet, with the last of 27 aircraft returning to service with brand-new cabin interiors and the airline’s vibrant new livery. Together with 14 newly delivered A320neo aircraft and those integrated following the merger of Vistara into Air India, the airline now operates 104 A320 Family aircraft featuring new or upgraded cabin interiors.

Launched in September 2024 as part of a broader $400 million initiative to modernise Air India’s entire legacy fleet, the A320neo retrofit programme has been completed within a record one-year timeframe.

3,024 weekly flights now operating with upgraded cabins

With 104 A320 Family aircraft featuring refreshed interiors, Air India now operates 3,024 flights per week across 82 domestic and short-haul international routes, including:

  • Major domestic routes such as Delhi–Mumbai, Delhi–Bengaluru, Delhi–Hyderabad, Mumbai–Bengaluru, Mumbai–Chennai and more.

  • Short-haul international destinations including Bangkok, Phuket, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur, Bali (Denpasar), Manila, Mauritius, Malé, Riyadh, Jeddah, and most flights to Singapore.

Modernised cabins with enhanced comfort

The retrofit of the 27 A320neo aircraft includes a new three-class cabin configuration featuring:

  • 3,564 new Economy Class seats

  • 648 new Premium Economy Class seats

  • 216 new Business Class seats

  • Over 450 metres of premium leather, 15,000+ metres of fabric, 5,000+ square metres of carpet, and 8,000+ kg of paint for the refreshed interiors and new livery

All seats are equipped with USB-A and USB-C ports, enabling travellers to charge personal devices and access Vista Stream, the airline’s inflight streaming service offering nearly 900 hours of content.

Air India’s narrowbody fleet has consistently recorded a strong Net Promoter Score (NPS) between 45 and 50 each month.

Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Air India, said:
“We continue to make good progress on the upgradation of our fleet. With over 100 of our A320 Family aircraft now featuring modern interiors, our guests will enjoy a superior travel experience across our extensive network. As we mark the end of the first phase of our narrowbody retrofit, we remain committed to elevating passenger experience and offering cabin products of global standards.”

Next phases of Air India’s fleet transformation

  • 2026: Retrofit of 13 legacy A321 aircraft, aligned with the integration of the erstwhile Vistara fleet.

  • 2025–2027: Retrofit of 26 legacy B787-8 aircraft, with the first aircraft (VT-ANT) already at the Boeing facility in Victorville, California. Completion is scheduled for mid-2027.

  • 2027–2028: Retrofit of 13 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, targeted for completion by October 2028, with timelines adjusted due to supply chain delays.

These efforts reinforce Air India’s commitment to delivering a world-class, consistent, and elevated travel experience across its expanding fleet.
