In a major step to revive and strengthen the tourism sector, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Maharashtra government has approved a new Beach Shack Policy. Inspired by the popular beach shacks of Goa, the policy allows the establishment of temporary shacks along selected beaches on the Konkan coast. The decision was cleared in a cabinet meeting chaired by the then Chief Minister, Shri Uddhav Thackeray.
Under the first phase of implementation, beach shacks will be developed at Guhagar and Arevare in Ratnagiri district, Kunkeshwar and Tarkarli in Sindhudurg district, Versoli and Diveagar in Raigad district, and Kelve and Bordi in Palghar district. These locations have been strategically selected to attract tourists and generate economic opportunities in coastal regions.
Interested individuals can apply to set up these temporary beach shacks through the official website of the Maharashtra Tourism Department. The government has also clarified that additional beaches will be included under the policy in a phased manner, based on public response and feasibility, ensuring controlled and sustainable tourism development.
The policy places strong emphasis on local participation and employment. Priority will be given to local residents for setting up beach shacks, and at least 80 percent of the jobs generated through these establishments will be reserved for locals. This initiative is expected to directly benefit coastal communities and enhance livelihood opportunities.
To safeguard the environment, beach shacks will be permitted only in areas approved by the Tourism Directorate and will require mandatory clearance from the State Coastal Zone Management Authority. These measures aim to ensure that tourism development does not adversely affect sensitive coastal ecosystems.
Overall, the Beach Shack Policy is expected to enhance tourist experiences, promote local cuisine and culture, and significantly boost Maharashtra’s coastal tourism. By balancing employment generation with environmental protection, the initiative seeks to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth of the state’s tourism sector.
