Centara leads fight against climate change in the Maldives

Centara Hotels & Resorts is setting a benchmark in sustainable luxury with a series of initiatives at The Atollia by Centara Hotels & Resorts, its multi-island, dual-resort destination in the Indian Ocean. The Atollia comprises Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives and Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives, blending family-friendly vibrancy with refined elegance while prioritizing environmental stewardship.

The resorts have already achieved significant milestones: solar panels across all villas and facilities have generated 2,323,125 kWh of energy, cutting CO₂ emissions by 1.96 kilotons; nearly 22 tonnes of plastic and glass have been recycled; and 15,933m³ of treated water has been reused for irrigation. Conservation efforts include planting 525 trees and palms and attaching 350 coral fragments to reefs, supporting biodiversity both on land and in the sea.

These actions form part of Centara’s global ESG strategy, which has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 35%, water consumption by 30%, and waste to landfill by 24.5% since 2019, with a long-term goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

Thirayuth Chirathivat, CEO of Centara Hotels & Resorts, stated, “Climate change is one of the most critical issues facing the planet today – and nowhere is it more urgent than in the Maldives. At Centara, we are embedding ESG into every aspect of operations to ensure that our guests and local communities can enjoy these islands for generations to come.”
