Patina Hotels & Resorts has announced the second edition of its Patina Art Residency, a platform bringing together artistic immersion, international art-world perspectives and purposeful patronage. Under the new theme, Rooted Realms, artists are invited to explore how place, identity and the environment shape one another. Submissions are open until 30 August, with the winner set to be revealed later this year at a private event in central London.
Launched in 2025, the Patina Art Residency gives a living artist the time, freedom and context to develop new work within a Patina destination. Rather than using place as a backdrop, the Residency invites the artist to engage with its environment, histories, materials and communities. London-based artist Shezad Dawood, the inaugural winner, will undertake his Residency at Patina Maldives, Fari Islands this October— with the resulting work to be shared at the event announcing 2026’s winner.
The winning artist of the Patina Art Residency 2026 will spend up to 30 days with full board accommodation and dedicated creative space at Patina Osaka— recently named World’s No.1 Best Hotel in the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2026. Designed by Strickland and located beside Japan’s historic Osaka Castle, the hotel reflects a philosophy of kisetsukan — the Japanese sensitivity to seasonal change — echoed in copper tones drawn from the castle’s roof, natural materials sourced from the region, and a design language built around memories of the land.
Patina brings together like-minded individuals through shared passions of art, music and design, fostering connections with both people and place. The Patina Art Residency continues this ethos, inviting an artist into that same spirit of exchange and a chance to create alongside a community of curious explorers. One work created during or meaningfully shaped by the Residency will enter the Patina Collection. Developed through direct relationships with living artists, the Collection forms an evolving artistic record of Patina’s destinations and the distinct cultural and environmental contexts that shape them.
The winning artist will be chosen by an international panel of art patrons and collectors convened by Darius Sanai and chaired by Maria Sukkar, Co-Chair of the TATE Middle East North Africa Acquisitions Committee. This year’s panel features returning names from last year – such as Christian Levett, Arturo Galansino and Sana Rezwan – as well as new and influential voices in the global art world, including Catherine Loewe, art historian and founder of Loewe Contemporary; Arch Hades, multidisciplinary artist and bestselling poet; celebrated auctioneer Simon de Pury; and Francesco Maccapani Missoni, visionary artist and entrepreneur of the Missoni family.
The full jury for 2026-27 comprises:
- Maria Sukkar, Co-Chair of the TATE Middle East North Africa Acquisitions Committee and owner of the iSelf Collection

“The Patina Art Residency was founded on the belief that meaningful patronage should offer artists more than a place to exhibit,” says Roland Fasel, President, Capella Hotel Group. “It should provide new perspectives and the opportunity for their work to be seen by people who can meaningfully engage with their practice. Our international jury brings exceptional breadth to the selection process, giving artists valuable visibility while helping us build the Patina Collection with intention and independent insight.”
“As the Residency moves from the island environment of the Maldives to the layered urban landscape of Osaka, we look forward to seeing how a new artist interprets place, belonging and our relationship with the environment.”
