Indian travellers are not waiting for long holidays, anniversaries or major career milestones to pack their bags. In 2026, they are officially shifting from milestone-led travel to lifestyle-led travel, turning everyday moments into prime getaway opportunities.
New research commissioned by Booking.com, one of the world’s leading online travel platforms, in partnership with YouGov, reveals that 58% of Indian travellers have taken a trip simply because they wanted to, while more than half (57%) logged two to three leisure trips in the past year that were not linked to any major life event, celebration or milestone; highlighting a growing shift toward more spontaneous, lifestyle-led travel.
From celebrating personal micro-wins to simply needing a change of scenery, today’s travellers are proving that spontaneous, everyday getaways are the new normal. When the urge hits, no formal justification is necessary because travelling just because is the best reason of all.

Celebrating Micro-Wins & Everyday Treats
Travel isn’t just for major promotions anymore, it’s for the micro-wins and everyday indulgences too. 61% of Indian travellers booked a trip to celebrate small wins like hitting a fitness goal or surviving a tough work week. Meanwhile, 55% booked a staycation just to indulge in hotel luxury, from plush bedding and room service to deep soaking tubs, 57% took off purely for a “vibe check” when the local weather turned sour and 48% admitted totravelling just to find a better backdrop for photos and videos. Everyday nudges play a role as well, with 20% of travellers booking a trip to cure post-trip blues and 16% simply because it was payday.
Everyday Life is the New Travel Trigger
Sometimes, everyday life gives you all the justification you need. 28% of survey respondents confessed to booking a trip specifically because their in-laws arrived for an extended stay, while 30% packed their bags the moment their nanny, house-help, or driver went on leave (if they get a break, why not you?). Another 35% took off because they had a fight or breakup with their partner and 46% fled to dodge drilling sounds, home renovations or noisy neighbors. When it comes to sidestepping social calendars, 50% booked a trip just to avoid boring social obligations like a distant relative’s dinner or a family wedding.
24/7 Travel Planning
Why wait for the weekend to plan your next getaway? When the travel bug bites, traditional planning hours are thrown completely out the window. Nearly half (48%) of Indian travellers confessed to booking their vacations while actively participating in an important work meeting or conference call, with another 45% admitting to routinely browsing destination photos while “pretending” to work. When it comes to booking, 35% book within the week of feeling the travel bug and 20% book on the same day.
When it comes to justifying a getaway, creativity reigns supreme. Over half (51%) simply declared that they or their family “just deserved a break,” while 36% claimed a deal was simply “too good to be ignored.” Others turned to health and wellness: 32% justified their spontaneous trip as being “cheaper than therapy” and 24% took medical advice literally: “My doctor said I need Vitamin D, so beach holiday it is!” For some, the stars aligned, 22% booked because their astrologer said it was an auspicious time to travel, while 10% used the ultimate pet-friendly excuse: “My pet needs a break.”
Santosh Kumar, Regional Head, South Asia at Booking.com, said: “For a long time, travel was tied to major milestones and calendar holidays. That approach is now shifting toward something far more personal, driven by real-time moods, spontaneous everyday triggers and celebrating the little things. From marking a fitness win, taking a break from routine to dodging an awkward family gathering, travellers are creating their own reasons to get away. At Booking.com, we believe that every reason, big, small, or unexpectedly humorous, is a reason to travel and our goal is to turn these spontaneous ‘Just Because’ moments into an instant, hassle-free journey”.
Methodology:
The ‘Summer Travel Research 2026’ was commissioned by Booking.com and conducted online by YouGov between May 13 and May 24, 2026. The study surveyed 1,000 consumers aged 18 and older across 10 Indian cities (~100 per city in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, and Jaipur). All respondents had travelled in the past 12 months, plan to travel in the next three months and are primary or key travel decision-makers. The sample reflects an even split between domestic and international travellers.
