Opera Australia brings an Egyptian spectacle to Sydney Harbour with the return of Aida in 2027

Travellers planning a visit to Sydney next autumn will have the opportunity to experience one of the city’s most spectacular cultural events, with Opera Australia (OA) announces the return of Verdi’s epic Aida to its over-water stage from 27 March to 25 April 2027.

Set against the world-famous backdrop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, the limited four-week season marks the return of the biggest and most successful opera in the history of OA’s annual harbourside event.

Bringing together Verdi’s soaring music with ancient Egyptian grandeur, monumental sets, dazzling fireworks and live camels, Aidais a chance for visitors to enjoy an unforgettable night of opera beneath the stars in one of the world’s most iconic settings.

Directed by acclaimed Australian theatre-maker Gale Edwards, the production will return to the harbour stage for the first time since its premiere in 2015. Designed by Mark Thompson, the set features an 18-metre-high, 15-tonne bust of Nefertiti overlooking the stage, with a cast of almost 130 performers and musicians.

The purpose-built venue at Mrs Macquaries Point transforms Sydney Harbour into an open-air entertainment precinct, where guests can enjoy sunset drinks and pre-performance dinner with multiple waterfront restaurants and bars built to suit every budget. For those who wish to elevate their experience, the HSBC Platinum Club offers premium fine dining packages as well as uninterrupted harbour views both before the performance and during the interval.

Opera on Sydney Harbour has become one of Sydney’s signature events, attracting visitors from across Australia and around the world.
