Emirates is celebrating 25 years of operations in Uganda, marking a significant milestone since its inaugural flight to Entebbe in 2000. Over the past quarter-century, the airline has carried 2.8 million passengers on 15,900 flights, linking Uganda to Emirates’ extensive global network through Dubai.
Initially operating three weekly flights via Nairobi and later Addis Ababa, Emirates introduced a direct service in 2007. In 2015, the airline deployed the Boeing 777-200LR, replacing the Airbus A330-200 and increasing capacity by 12%. Today, Emirates operates a three-class Boeing 777-300ER, remaining the only international airline offering a First Class cabin to and from Entebbe.
Supporting tourism and connectivity
For the past two years, Emirates has partnered with the Uganda Tourism Board to promote inbound tourism by showcasing the country’s natural beauty, wildlife, adventure offerings, and cultural heritage. Since January 2025, the airline has recorded a 16% growth in passenger traffic on the Dubai–Entebbe route, with key travel markets including the US, China, India, the UK, Thailand, and the Middle East.
Community engagement
Emirates has also contributed to local communities through its ‘Dubai 7s for Good’ CSR initiative. In September 2024, the programme raised UGX 587,485,310 to upgrade infrastructure and sports facilities at North Road Primary School, supporting rugby, football, and netball. The project included the installation of a rugby pitch with 2,000-seat bleachers, 16 solar-powered water stations, and sports equipment donations.
Mohamed Taher, Emirates Country Manager for Uganda, said:
“Uganda remains an important market for Emirates. Over the past 25 years, we’ve built strong relationships with customers, partners, and stakeholders while continuously investing in our operations. We remain committed to connecting global travellers to Uganda and offering Ugandans greater access to the world.”
Anniversary celebration flight
To commemorate the milestone, Emirates operated a special anniversary flight to Entebbe using a refreshed four-class Boeing 777. The event included a static tour showcasing Emirates’ latest Premium Economy cabin, introduced in Uganda for the first time. Distinguished guests from the aviation and tourism sectors attended, including General Edward Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport, and Fred Bamwesigye, Director General of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority.
The celebration also highlighted Emirates’ ongoing USD 5 billion aircraft retrofit programme, which is upgrading 219 A380s and Boeing 777s with new cabin interiors. So far, 72 aircraft have been completed, with work continuing through 2026 and beyond to ensure all destinations, including Uganda, benefit from the enhanced onboard experience.
