Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the launch of India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, which will operate between Guwahati in Assam and Howrah in West Bengal. The announcement was made during a New Year meeting at Rail Bhawan, New Delhi.
The Minister confirmed that all trials, testing, and safety certifications for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train have been successfully completed. The inaugural service on the Guwahati–Howrah route will be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month. Describing the development as a landmark achievement, Ashwini Vaishnaw said it marks a significant step forward for Indian Railways and enhances the quality of long-distance rail travel in the country.
He further noted that 2026 will be a transformative year for Indian Railways, with a strong focus on reforms and the rollout of multiple passenger-friendly initiatives aimed at improving comfort, safety, and service efficiency.
The new sleeper train will benefit several districts along its route, including Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon in Assam, and Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Howrah in West Bengal, strengthening rail connectivity across the eastern and northeastern regions.
Highlighting the technical advancements, the Minister said the train features an entirely new bogie design with upgraded suspension systems and enhanced performance parameters. The interiors, ladders, and layouts have been ergonomically designed, with special emphasis on passenger safety and security.
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train signals a new chapter in overnight rail travel in India, blending speed, modern amenities, and comfort. It reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to innovation, regional integration, and passenger-centric services, offering travellers a faster, safer, and more comfortable journey experience.
