India inaugurates state-of-the-art Consulate in Shanghai

India has officially opened its new state-of-the-art Consulate building in Shanghai, marking the first relocation of the mission in 32 years. The modern Chancery, located at the Dawning Centre in Changning District, spans 1,436.63 sqm—more than double the size of the previous facility—and will begin full operations on December 8.

The new building was inaugurated by Ambassador Pradeep Kumar Rawat, who highlighted the significance of the occasion during the year in which India and China celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations. He noted Shanghai’s unique place in these ties, now reflected in a world-class Consulate equipped to meet contemporary needs.

Over 400 guests, including diplomats, Shanghai Municipal Government representatives, and members of the Indian diaspora across the Consulate’s jurisdiction, attended the ceremony.

Consul General Pratik Mathur, in his address, reaffirmed the Consulate’s commitment to delivering seamless services for Indian nationals and Chinese partners. He thanked the Ministry of External Affairs and local authorities for their support, emphasizing that the expanded facility consolidates consular, commercial, cultural, and administrative operations onto a single modern floorplate—enhancing efficiency and public service delivery.
