India ranks 4th globally in tourism spending growth in Japan

The Japan Tourism Agency under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has released preliminary figures for inbound tourism consumption in 2025, highlighting India’s strong growth as a key source market for travel to Japan.

According to the report, India recorded a year-on-year growth of 4.2% in tourism and leisure spending, securing the fourth position globally among the fastest-growing markets for inbound travel consumption in Japan. Within the South and Southeast Asia region, India ranked as the third fastest-growing market, following Singapore with 11.1% growth and Malaysia with 6.6%.

Building on this positive momentum, total travel consumption by Indian visitors to Japan reached an estimated ¥78.4 billion in 2025. The figure represents a significant year-on-year increase of 39.6%, reflecting a rise of ¥22.2 billion compared to 2024, when spending by Indian travellers stood at ¥56.2 billion.

Indian travellers also demonstrated higher-than-average spending patterns during their visits. The average per-person expenditure by Indian visitors reached ¥276,718, notably higher than the overall foreign visitor average of ¥224,806 within the tourism and leisure category.

Spending by Indian tourists was largely concentrated in accommodation, which accounted for 43.8% of total expenditure, followed by food and beverage at 18.7%, shopping at 17.7%, and other categories.

The growth in spending was supported by a substantial rise in arrivals from India. In 2025, Japan welcomed approximately 315,100 Indian visitors, representing a 35.2% increase compared to the previous year.

Industry observers attribute this growth to improved air connectivity between India and Japan, India’s expanding economy, and increasing interest among Indian travellers in Japan’s cultural heritage, traditions, and natural attractions.

The surge in arrivals and visitor spending highlights India’s growing importance within Japan’s inbound tourism landscape. With greater awareness of Japan’s year-round experiences—from spring cherry blossoms to autumn foliage and winter powder snow—Indian travellers are increasingly viewing Japan as a preferred all-season destination.
