India has welcomed approximately 56 lakh foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) till August 2025, while domestic tourism soared to 303.59 crore visits, according to official data.
Of the total FTAs up to April 2025, 131,856 arrivals (or about 4.1%) were for medical purposes.
In the 2024–25 fiscal year, 40 projects across 23 states were approved under the Sustainable and Responsible Tourism Initiative (SASCI), involving a total outlay of ₹3,295.76 crore, fully funded by the central government.
Under the Swadesh Darshan and Swadesh Darshan 2.0 schemes, 110 thematic circuit projects have been developed across themes including Ramayana, Buddhist, Coastal, and Tribal circuits.
The tourism sector continues to be a key pillar of India’s economy: in 2023–24 it contributed ₹15.73 lakh crore to GDP (5.22%), while generating approximately 36.90 million direct and 47.72 million indirect jobs — together accounting for 13.34% of total employment.
Inbound tourism up to June 2025 recorded 16.5 lakh visitors, while outbound travel stood at 84.4 lakh, together generating foreign exchange revenues of ₹51,532 crore.
