IndiGo becomes first Indian airline to induct A321XLR aircraft

IndiGo has become the first Indian airline to induct the Airbus A321XLR into its fleet, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s long-term international growth strategy. The long-range variant of the A321neo arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, earlier today.

The aircraft will be deployed on IndiGo’s upcoming non-stop services connecting Mumbai to Athens starting 23 January 2026, followed by Delhi to Athens from 24 January 2026. Both routes will operate three times weekly, strengthening direct connectivity between India and Europe.

The next-generation Airbus A321XLR offers a range of up to 8,700 kilometres, enabling IndiGo to serve longer international routes with superior fuel efficiency while maintaining its cost leadership. Configured in a dual-class layout, the aircraft features 12 IndiGoStretch seats and 183 Economy Class seats, both equipped with ergonomically designed RECARO seating to ensure enhanced comfort on long-haul journeys.

IndiGo has a firm order of 40 A321XLR aircraft, with nine deliveries scheduled in calendar year 2026. Following its initial deployment on the Athens routes, subsequent aircraft will be introduced on existing international services such as Istanbul, Turkey, and Denpasar, Bali. Future deliveries will support expansion into additional long-haul destinations across Europe and East Asia.

Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer, IndiGo, said, “We are proud to be the first Indian airline to welcome the Airbus A321XLR into our fleet. This induction represents an important step in redefining long-haul travel from India. The advanced capabilities of this aircraft allow us to connect India to new global markets while reinforcing our commitment to cost efficiency, sustainability, and customer comfort.”

He added, “We are delighted to partner with Airbus and RECARO to combine next-generation aircraft performance with a thoughtfully designed cabin experience that enhances passenger comfort on long-distance flights.”

Jürgen Westermeier, President & Managing Director, Airbus India and South Asia, said, “The arrival of the first A321XLR marks a proud moment for IndiGo and Indian aviation. This aircraft opens up mid- to long-haul routes that were previously beyond the reach of single-aisle aircraft, acting as a catalyst for IndiGo’s international expansion and strengthening India’s global connectivity.”

Dr. Mark Hiller, CEO of RECARO Aircraft Seating and RECARO Holding, said, “IndiGo’s A321XLR debut showcases RECARO’s premium R5 business class and R2 economy class seating solutions, delivering exceptional comfort for passengers. We congratulate the IndiGo team on this landmark achievement.”

Gaël Méheust, President and CEO of CFM International, said, “We are honoured to support IndiGo’s continued growth with the LEAP-powered A321XLR. The aircraft’s extended range, combined with the performance and durability of LEAP engines, marks an exciting new phase in IndiGo’s international journey.”
