IndiGo begins Bengaluru MRO expansion

IndiGo commences construction of a major Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) in Bengaluru, marking a significant milestone in its strategy to enhance self-reliance in aircraft maintenance. The facility is being developed on a sprawling 31-acre site, following a land allotment agreement signed with airport authorities in May 2025. As India’s aviation sector continues to grow rapidly, this initiative is expected to substantially reduce the outflow of foreign currency currently spent on overseas maintenance services.

Once completed, the new MRO hub will be among the largest in India. It is designed to be three times the size of IndiGo’s current MRO operations in Delhi and Bengaluru combined. The facility will include 12 aircraft bays, capable of accommodating both narrowbody and widebody aircraft, including IndiGo’s Airbus A320 and A321XLR fleets, as well as its upcoming Airbus A350s. This expanded capacity will help enhance turnaround times and support the airline’s increasing operational needs.

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers highlighted that the Bengaluru MRO facility will reinforce the airline’s already strong presence in the city, which operates over 200 flights daily. He described the development as a pivotal move in creating a robust aviation ecosystem and shaping the future of Indian aviation. The facility is slated for completion and full operational readiness by early 2028, significantly boosting the country’s in-house maintenance capabilities.

The MRO center is also expected to generate substantial employment opportunities. IndiGo has announced more than 1,000 job openings for skilled professionals, including engineers, technicians, logistics personnel, and various support staff. This hiring initiative is set to enhance skill development and reinforce Bengaluru’s status as a key hub for aerospace and aviation talent.

Bengaluru is increasingly becoming a focal point for aviation infrastructure development. Air India is also constructing a widebody MRO facility at BLR, covering 35 acres and featuring multiple hangars, with completion expected next year. The project will include a dedicated training organization for maintenance professionals.

Alongside these airline-led ventures, global aerospace companies are also expanding in Bengaluru. Thales has launched an inflight entertainment and services lab, Collins Aerospace has opened an engineering development and testing center, and HaveUs Aerotech has set up a large spares warehouse. Together, these investments are solidifying Bengaluru’s role as a major regional hub for aircraft maintenance, innovation, and aerospace growth.
