Japan National Tourism Organization announces Cherry Blossom Forecast 2026

Japan National Tourism Organization announces the eagerly awaited Cherry Blossom Forecast 2026. While March to April marks the peak of cherry blossom (Sakura) season in most parts of Japan, the blooms begin earlier in Okinawa and gradually move north to Hokkaido.

Sakura can be enjoyed across almost the entire country, often with fewer crowds at select locations. In Hokkaido, blossoms last up to May and are complemented by the vibrant moss pink (“Shiba Sakura”), offering visitors a spectacular floral display. Later in summer, from July onward, Hokkaido’s famous lavender fields provide additional seasonal charm. In Okinawa, cherry blossoms typically bloom as early as February, creating a unique backdrop of turquoise seas and lush greenery for a tranquil viewing experience.

Cherry blossom festivals are celebrated nationwide in parks, castles, and riversides. The Japan National Tourism Organization highlights key regional spots for travelers seeking both popular and quieter experiences:

  • Okinawa – select cherry blossom spots

  • Hokkaido – four major locations for peak bloom

  • Tohoku – cherry blossom viewing

  • Tochigi – Nikko Kaido Cherry Blossom Trail

  • Nara – Yoshino Cherry Blossoms

  • Hiroshima – Mt. Noro cherry blossom viewing
