Saudi Arabia and Qatar to launch high speed rail link by 2026

Saudi Arabia and Qatar are set to enhance regional connectivity with a new high-speed electric railway linking Riyadh and Doha, scheduled to begin operations in June 2026. Approved by Saudi Arabia’s Cabinet, the 785-kilometre cross-border project will reduce travel time between the two capitals to around two hours, marking a significant leap for Gulf transport infrastructure.

Aligned with Saudi Vision 2030 and Qatar National Vision 2030, the rail link supports goals around sustainable mobility, economic diversification and tourism development. The fast, reliable service is expected to reshape regional travel by offering an efficient alternative to air and road transport.

Tourism is likely to benefit strongly, with easier access encouraging multi-destination travel between the two countries. Visitors will be able to combine Qatar’s luxury hospitality and cultural experiences with Saudi Arabia’s rapidly expanding tourism offerings, boosting cross-border visitor flows.

The railway will also support trade, investment and workforce mobility, strengthening economic ties and regional cooperation. Designed as a high-speed electric system, the project underscores a commitment to greener transport by reducing dependence on carbon-intensive travel.

Once operational, the Riyadh–Doha rail link is expected to set a new benchmark for sustainable, cross-border connectivity in the Middle East.
