Sun Siyam has taken a landmark step in its sustainability journey with the launch of one of the largest solar energy initiatives in the Maldives hospitality sector. The project, revealed during a dedicated event at Sun Siyam Olhuveli on 6 December 2025, marks a significant milestone in the group’s long-term commitment to renewable energy and environmental stewardship. The event welcomed government officials, local media, trade partners, and members of the group’s sustainability and management teams, who received an exclusive preview of how the new solar installations will transform energy consumption across the resorts.

A Major Leap Toward a Greener Future
Built around three core pillars—enhanced sustainability, greater energy independence, and technological innovation—the initiative accelerates progress toward both national renewable energy targets and Sun Siyam’s long-term environmental vision under the Sun Siyam Care framework.
Across Siyam World Maldives and Sun Siyam Olhuveli, the project delivers:
-
Combined installed solar capacity: 4,110 kWp
-
Expected annual clean energy generation: 6,024,881.99 kWh
-
Annual diesel savings: USD 1,292,289.12
-
Annual CO₂ reduction: More than 4,458 tons
-
Energy offset: 17% at Siyam World and 12% at Sun Siyam Olhuveli
These reductions contribute directly to the Maldives’ goal of 33% renewable energy penetration by 2028 and its long-term Net Zero 2030 ambition.

Hybrid Solar Systems: Innovation at Scale
Both resorts will operate hybrid solar systems with battery storage, designed and implemented by technology partner Hayleys Fentons Ltd of Sri Lanka.
The systems include:
-
1,720 kWh battery storage – Siyam World Maldives
-
537.5 kWh battery storage – Sun Siyam Olhuveli
-
Real-time monitoring dashboards for precise energy optimisation
-
Workforce training programs for resort engineering teams
This technological framework ensures stable, efficient energy distribution, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, and a scalable model for future Sun Siyam properties.
Driving the Future of Sustainable Hospitality
With installations scheduled for completion in December 2025, the initiative marks the start of Sun Siyam Resorts’ long-term renewable energy roadmap. The group aims to achieve:
-
50% renewable energy usage by 2030
-
A scalable solar model for all properties
-
Enhanced energy resilience during peak demand
-
Continued year-on-year carbon footprint reduction
Alignment with Sun Siyam Care
The solar program strengthens several pillars of the Sun Siyam Care sustainability framework:
-
Environmental stewardship through a shift from diesel-based systems
-
Nearly 6 million kWh of clean energy generation annually
-
Training engineering teams in solar maintenance
-
Industry leadership in sustainable hospitality
CEO Deepak Booneady said:
“At Sun Siyam, sustainability is not an initiative. It is a responsibility we proudly embrace. Through Sun Siyam Care, we are committed to preserving the natural beauty of our islands, uplifting our communities, and operating with integrity for the generations to come. This solar transformation is a major step toward a cleaner, more resilient future for our resorts and the destination.”
