Mumbai unveils a striking new addition to its coastline with the inauguration of a 5.25-kilometre sea-facing promenade along the Coastal Road. Virtually launched by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the project offers both residents and tourists a fresh way to experience the city’s scenic waterfront. Spanning from Priyadarshini Park to Worli, the new promenade is more than twice the length of the iconic Marine Drive and promises breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea.
Starting August 15, the public can access the promenade for walking, jogging, and cycling. It boasts wide walkways, lush landscaped gardens, blooming plants, and wheelchair-friendly ramps to ensure inclusivity. Benches placed throughout the stretch invite visitors to sit back and enjoy the tranquil coastal views.
To enhance safety and ease of movement, four pedestrian underpasses have been built at Bhulabhai Desai Road, Haji Ali Junction, Worli Dairy, and Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk. These crossings provide safe passage for pedestrians while helping ease traffic at major intersections.
During the launch, CM Fadnavis hailed the project as a transformative step in reconnecting Mumbai with its coastline. He also announced that from midnight on Independence Day, the Coastal Road will be open for 24-hour vehicular traffic, with speed limits enforced through CCTV surveillance.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde applauded the promenade as part of Mumbai’s ongoing urban renewal efforts. He shared plans for a sprawling 70-hectare park along the Coastal Road, which will further expand the city’s green and recreational spaces.
Constructed on reclaimed land, the promenade is engineered to endure the city’s intense monsoon tides, serving both as a leisure space and a coastal protection structure. For Mumbaikars, it introduces a vibrant new destination to walk, cycle, unwind, and enjoy the beauty of Mumbai’s shoreline.
