Ahead of Cannes Film Festival 2026: The iconic hotel that started It all

As the cultural calendar races from the Met Gala to the Venice Biennale and now towards the Cannes Film Festival, global attention is once again set to turn towards the French Riviera. From flashing cameras, couture-lined red carpets, superyachts along the Croisette, and the world’s biggest names in cinema. Long before the city of Cannes became the cinematic spectacle it is today, there was one address that defined the glamour of the festival itself.

Overlooking the Mediterranean at 58 Boulevard de La Croisette, Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel has remained inseparable from the identity of Cannes for more than a century. The Belle Epoque landmark opened in 1913 by hotelier Henri Ruhl and the property quickly became one of the Riviera’s most celebrated hotels, recognised for its distinctive domes, historic façade, and sweeping sea views.

Its relationship with cinema, however, transformed the hotel into something far beyond hospitality. In 1946, the very first Cannes Film Festival was hosted within the hotel’s old casino, establishing a historic connection between the property, Hollywood, and global cinema culture. That year, the property welcomed only eight journalists present for the event. However, an unbreakable bond was created between the Cannes Film Festival and the hotel.

Today, nearly eight decades later, the hotel continues to remain one of the festival’s most important social and cultural epicenters. From jury presidents and international filmmakers to actors, editors, luxury brands and global media, the Carlton has long served as Cannes’ unofficial living room during festival season.

For Indian travellers increasingly drawn towards cinematic tourism, heritage hospitality and culture-led luxury experiences, the property represents far more than a hotel stay. It offers a direct connection to film history itself. Over the years Carlton Cannes has welcomed icons including Grace Kelly, Cary Grant, Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise across generations of festival history.

The property itself recently entered a new chapter following an extensive restoration and reopening in 2023. Led by renowned French interior architect Tristan Auer, the renovation carefully preserved the hotel’s Belle Époque identity while introducing contemporary Riviera elegance through redesigned suites, courtyard gardens, restored frescoes, and one of Cannes’ largest infinity pools.

Despite its evolution, the essence of the Carlton Cannes remains unchanged. During the festival, the lobby hums with photographers, producers, luxury maisons and global stars. The Carlton Beach Club continues to host some of the Riviera’s most exclusive gatherings, while international publications and luxury brands increasingly use the hotel as a backdrop for fashion shoots, film conversations and cultural events.

As Indian luxury travel continues to evolve towards experience-led and culturally immersive journeys, Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel stands as a reminder that some hotels are not merely places to stay, they become part of global cultural history itself. Ahead of Cannes Film Festival 2026, few addresses capture that spirit more powerfully than the hotel where the festival story first began.
