Government approves new rail line in Kutch, Gujarat to boost tourism

The Union Cabinet has given the green light to four major railway projects worth a combined INR 12,328 crore, including a new railway line in the Kutch region of Gujarat aimed at promoting tourism. The line will connect several prominent destinations, including the Rann of Kutch, the Harappan archaeological site of Dholavira, Koteshwar temple, Narayan Sarovar, and the historic Lakhpat fort. Officials believe this infrastructure upgrade will open up greater access to one of India’s most culturally and geographically significant areas.

The newly sanctioned line will add 145 route kilometers and 164 track kilometers to Gujarat’s railway network, enhancing connectivity in a region that is currently difficult to reach. According to government sources, the project will not only serve tourists but also aid in the transportation of key commodities such as salt, cement, coal, clinker, and bentonite. This dual focus on tourism and freight makes it a strategically important development for the state.

In addition to the railway projects, the Cabinet has also approved the restructuring and extension of the PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme until March 2030. The revised plan comes with an outlay of INR 7,332 crore, with the goal of reaching another 50 lakh street vendor beneficiaries. The scheme aims to provide affordable loans and promote self-reliance among street vendors across India.

Government officials have emphasised that the Kutch rail line is more than just a transport project—it is a tool for regional development. Improved accessibility is expected to increase visitor numbers to the Rann of Kutch during the popular Rann Utsav festival, as well as to Dholavira, a UNESCO World Heritage site that showcases the remnants of the Indus Valley Civilization. Religious tourism to Koteshwar and Narayan Sarovar is also anticipated to rise.

The decision aligns with the central government’s ongoing focus on infrastructure-led growth, especially in areas that have both economic and cultural significance. By enhancing transportation links, the Kutch rail line could also stimulate local businesses, hospitality services, and handicrafts unique to the region, thereby boosting livelihoods.

With the approval now in place, railway authorities are expected to move forward with detailed project planning and timelines. Once completed, the Kutch line could become a key component in Gujarat’s tourism circuit, balancing heritage preservation with modern connectivity.
