India resumes E-Visa services for Canada

After an almost two-month hiatus, India has started offering electronic visa services to Canadian citizens again.

Following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s claims of the “potential” participation of Indian agents in the June 18 execution of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia, tensions between India and Canada erupted in September. In 2020, India classified Nijjar as a terrorist.

Trudeau’s accusations were dismissed by India as “absurd” and “motivated”. A few days later, Ottawa was ordered to reduce its diplomatic representation in India by New Delhi, which declared it was temporarily stopping the issuing of visas to Canadian citizens.

Additionally, India had requested that Canada take strong action against terrorists and anti-Indian groups that are based there.
