Indian travellers lose over ₹136 crore in rejected Schengen Visa applications

Indian travellers incurred losses exceeding ₹136 crore in non-refundable Schengen visa application fees during 2024, highlighting the financial impact of visa rejections on one of the world’s fastest-growing outbound travel markets. According to data released by the European Commission, more than 1.65 lakh visa applications submitted from India were refused during the year.

India recorded over 11 lakh Schengen visa applications in 2024, making it one of the largest source markets for European travel. However, a rejection rate of nearly 15 per cent resulted in substantial losses for travellers, as visa application fees remain non-refundable regardless of the outcome.

Industry observers note that the figures underline the growing demand among Indian travellers for European destinations, while also drawing attention to challenges related to visa processing, approval rates, and travel planning. France, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands reportedly accounted for the highest number of rejected applications from Indian travellers.

Travel trade stakeholders believe the continued rise in outbound travel demand from India is prompting calls for more streamlined visa processes, greater transparency, and improved access to appointments for genuine travellers. The development comes as India continues to strengthen its position as one of the most important outbound tourism markets globally.

Experts also point out that despite rejection challenges, Indian interest in European travel remains strong, driven by leisure tourism, business travel, education, and premium travel experiences across the Schengen region.
