Tamil Nadu, the southernmost state of India, successfully participated in Tourism Expo Japan 2026, held in Tokyo from September 24 to 27, 2026, showcasing the State’s rich heritage, ancient temples, Buddhist connections, diverse landscapes, vibrant culture, cuisine, festivals and emerging tourism experiences to the Japanese travel trade and visitors.
The booth was inaugurated by H.E. Nagma Mohamed Mallick, Ambassador of India to Japan, Dr S. Swarna, Principal Secretary to the Government for the Tourism, Culture and Special Initiatives Department, Tamil Nadu, Mr Suman Billa, Additional Secretary and DG, Ministry of Tourism, Govt India, and Ms. Suchi Tyagi, Secretary, Tourism, Govt of Rajasthan
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. S. Swarna, I.A.S., Principal Secretary to the Government, Tourism, Culture and Special Initiatives Department, said:
“Japan and Tamil Nadu are linked by a shared Buddhist heritage, and our participation in Tourism Expo Japan has provided an opportunity to invite Japanese travellers to experience this heritage first-hand. Tamil Nadu’s rich and diverse heritage is reflected not only in its iconic monuments but also in its ancient Sangam literary tradition.
“Sangam literature describes five distinct ecological landscapes — Kurinji (hilly and mountainous), Mullai(forest), Marutham (agricultural), Neithal (coastal) and Palai (arid) — each with its own biodiversity, cultural traditions and experiences. From trekking in the hills to experiencing coastal life, Tamil Nadu offers travellers the opportunity to experience both its natural diversity and living culture.

As part of its international tourism promotion, registration is open for Discover Tamil Nadu – International Edition 2026-27, a curated FAM trip from 12 to 20 January 2027, during the Pongal and festival season. International social media influencers, travel journalists, travel media representatives, travel agents, tour operators and DMCs can register. Strengthening India–Japan Cultural and Buddhist Connections
During the Expo, Tamil Nadu Tourism engaged with Japanese travel trade representatives to explore opportunities for increasing tourist arrivals from Japan and developing customised travel experiences. The State also presented opportunities for investment and partnerships in areas including heritage hospitality, eco-tourism, adventure tourism and experiential travel.
The Department will also briefed Japanese investors on opportunities in heritage hospitality, eco-tourism and adventure tourism. Visitors explored heritage, eco-tourism, adventure travel and cultural experiences, all showcasing Tamil Nadu’s appeal to global travellers
Tamil Nadu also holds an important place in the history of Buddhism in South India. The ancient port cities of Tamil Nadu served as important centres of maritime and cultural exchange, connecting the region with Buddhist communities across Asia. Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, Poompuhar (Kaveripoompattinam) and other historic centres were associated with the spread and flourishing of Buddhism. The Buddhist scholar and monk Bodhidharma, traditionally associated with Kancheepuram, is remembered for his journey to China and his enduring place in East Asian Buddhist traditions.
Tamil Nadu shares a deep and enduring connection with Japan, strengthened by growing cultural, educational, spiritual, and people-to-people exchanges. Japan, with its rich Buddhist heritage and deep appreciation for spirituality, traditional arts, architecture, and craftsmanship, offers a natural platform for showcasing Tamil Nadu’s Buddhist legacy alongside its diverse cultural heritage, classical traditions, cuisine, architecture, festivals, and living traditions. Tourism Development
Tamil Nadu is home to Seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites and hosts a variety of vibrant events such as the Indian Dance Festival, Tamil Nadu International Balloon Festival and Tamil Nadu International Kite Festival. The State’s festive spirit is at its peak during Pongal, the grand harvest celebration, which features Jallikattu, the traditional bull-taming sport and a modern 16-acre Jallikattu arena has been completed in Madurai, reflecting the State’s commitment to preserving ancient customs alongside contemporary facilities. The Discover Tamil Nadu FAM trip (12 to 20 January 2027) is timed to Pongal so that participants experience the festival first hand.
In addition, the destination is developing tourism segments such as adventure tourism, with a variety of water sports along its nearly 1,076 kilometres of coastline; and niche segments such as Rural Tourism, Medical & Wellness Tourism and Eco-Tourism. The State’s stunning natural environment is crowned by mountain ranges ideal for a summer getaway to its hill stations, where lesser-known destinations such as Kolli Hills, Jawadhu Hills and Yercaud are being developed.
Tamil Nadu: Culture and Nature
Tamil Nadu is a vibrant tapestry of culture and nature, captivating travellers with its ancient temples and historical monuments, which stand as a testament to the architectural prowess of its ancestors. Visitors can also explore the bustling urban landscapes, serene hill stations, pristine beaches and diverse wildlife.
The State’s natural environment, featuring the Biosphere Reserves (Nilgiris, Agasthiyarmalai, and Gulf of Mannar), National Parks and Mangroves, is an oasis for adventure and outdoor enthusiasts. Activities such as trekking, water sports, and safaris await those eager to explore. Coastal tourism in Tamil Nadu is equally enticing, with the convergence of the Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean, and Arabian Sea offering stunning maritime experiences. A key highlight is the majestic 133 feet Thiruvalluvar Statue with India’s only Glass Bridge constructed on the sea, illuminated with Laser & Sound show during nights, standing tall off the coast of Kanniyakumari, symbolising the region’s rich literary heritage while offering visitors breathtaking views to witness both sunrise and sunset from its vantage point.
Culturally, Tamil Nadu is rich with traditional dances, folk arts, flavourful cuisine, and exquisite handicrafts, including brass and bronze items, sarees, embroidery, jewellery, and pottery. The State is also renowned for its Geographical Indications (GI) tags, with a total of 74 distinct GI-tagged products that highlight its rich artisanal heritage and unique regional specialities. Among tea and spice plantations and traditional villages, visitors can stay in homestays run by local families and experience everyday Tamil life. The The State’s pilgrimage sites also draw visitors from near and far.
