Prime Minister Narendra Modi launches Viksit UDAN, the next phase of India’s Regional Connectivity Scheme, and inaugurated the new integrated terminal building at Jodhpur Airport, marking a significant milestone in the country’s aviation infrastructure and regional air connectivity. The upgraded scheme, backed by an investment of ₹29,000 crore, aims to strengthen connectivity to Tier II, Tier III and remote destinations while making air travel more accessible and affordable. The new terminal, developed by the Airports Authority of India at a cost of approximately ₹480 crore, is designed to handle nearly 20 lakh passengers annually.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said the next phase of UDAN reflects the Government’s commitment to ensuring that air travel becomes a catalyst for inclusive growth and regional development. He noted that Viksit UDAN will improve connectivity to underserved regions, support tourism, generate employment, and strengthen economic opportunities across the country. He also highlighted the transformation of India’s aviation sector over the past decade, with a significant rise in the number of operational airports and passenger traffic.
The newly inaugurated terminal at Jodhpur Airport features modern passenger amenities, enhanced operational efficiency, and sustainable infrastructure. The expanded facility is expected to improve the travel experience while supporting Rajasthan’s growing tourism and business sectors. The development also strengthens Jodhpur’s position as an important aviation gateway for domestic and international travellers.
The launch of Viksit UDAN forms part of the Government’s broader vision to create a robust aviation ecosystem by improving last-mile connectivity, promoting balanced regional development, and expanding opportunities for tourism, trade, and investment. The initiative is expected to further accelerate the growth of India’s civil aviation sector while contributing to the country’s long-term infrastructure goals.
