Maharashtra plans major tourism overhaul through new destination model

The Maharashtra Government is preparing a major transformation of the state’s tourism sector through the introduction of a destination management model aimed at improving tourism planning, infrastructure, promotion, and visitor experiences across key travel regions.

The proposed framework will reportedly focus on creating destination-level tourism governance bodies that will help streamline coordination between tourism departments, local authorities, hospitality stakeholders, and private sector partners.

Industry experts believe the initiative could significantly strengthen Maharashtra’s positioning as a globally competitive tourism destination while supporting sustainable tourism growth, regional development, and improved infrastructure management.

The move is also expected to enhance destination branding, improve tourist facilities, and encourage more structured tourism planning across cultural, coastal, heritage, wellness, and urban tourism circuits within the state.

Travel trade stakeholders have described the development as an important step toward modernising tourism administration while creating stronger opportunities for hospitality investment, local employment, and tourism-led economic growth.

The initiative comes amid rising domestic tourism movement and increasing focus among Indian states on strengthening tourism infrastructure and experiential travel offerings.
