Nagpur has been officially designated as a tourism district by the Maharashtra Tourism Department, a move aimed at strengthening the city and surrounding region as a structured tourism destination while encouraging greater investment in tourism infrastructure and hospitality.
The new status is expected to support the development and promotion of Nagpur’s heritage, wildlife, cultural and experiential tourism potential. The city serves as an important gateway to several tourism attractions across Vidarbha, including wildlife destinations and natural landscapes in the wider region.
As part of the initiative, tourism and hospitality businesses are set to receive an extended period of tax-related benefits, with the applicable relief period being increased from seven to ten years. The measure is intended to improve the investment environment for businesses involved in tourism and allied activities.
Nagpur already offers a combination of urban, heritage and nature-based attractions, while its strategic location and transport connectivity give it potential to serve as a base for wider Vidarbha tourism circuits.
The district also provides access to wildlife destinations including Pench, Tadoba, Nagzira and Navegaon, while attractions within and around Nagpur include lakes, forests, heritage sites, museums and cultural experiences.
The tourism district designation is expected to give greater institutional focus to destination development and encourage investment in accommodation, visitor facilities, attractions and tourism-related services.
The move comes as Maharashtra continues to strengthen its tourism infrastructure and promote a wider range of destinations beyond the state’s established tourism centres.
