Qatar’s Unexpected Summer Guests: Whale Sharks Return to the Gulf
Every summer, Qatar’s northern waters become the setting for one of the region’s most remarkable natural sights. From June to September, hundreds of whale sharks gather in the waters around the Al Shaheen Marine Zone, off the north-east coast of Qatar, during the seasonal feeding period. Despite their size, whale sharks are gentle, slow-moving creatures and are known as the largest fish in the sea.
The annual gathering offers a lesser-known view of Qatar, beyond Doha’s architecture, museums and hospitality experiences. Out at sea, the sight of whale sharks moving calmly through the Arabian Gulf highlights the country’s strong connection with its marine environment and its long relationship with the sea. For travellers and nature enthusiasts, it is one of Qatar’s most unexpected summer stories.
